Angelique, I think Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man might qualify.

Subject: [hardy-l] A Modern Jude

Dear Hardy list

I wonder if any of you can assist me. I am venturing into the terra rather incognita (for me) of contemporary fiction, and while I shall be back with the Victorians soon enough, I should be most grateful to hear
from anyone with expertise and competence in this century or the end of the last one. I am looking for a modern
Jude the Obscure. Someone, ideally in a novel, who is of humble origins, notably talented, and continuously thwarted by their environment. Or, alternatively, someone who is talented, of humble origins, and not thwarted by their environment.

All responses gratefully received,

Angelique
