Yes, Rosemarie & Dennis. I think it was the lack of ambition that would
have hurt Jemima's feelings-either because, as Dennis surmises, she might
have been horrified to see how her occasional fatalistic remarks could be
seen to have affected her 8-year-old son's view of the world, or because she
herself was very ambitious for him, seeking out schooling, giving him books,
negotiating a good deal on his architectural apprenticeship, etc. It's true
that she encouraged her children not to marry and to stay close to home, but
for Tom at least she wanted him to have worldly success (on her terms, of
course-as an architect, not a writer!).
