It has just come back to me across the senility barrier
(I just had a birthday) my high school foot ball team's cheer:
Perambulate! Perambulate!
Progress the ball across the field!
I am deeply impressed by the scholarship on
this seemingly staid -- as I first heard it with the first
reading of Hardy's poem -- even stodgy word.
Who would have guessed such passion and brimstone
lay beneath the ferns and the dreamer musing there?
Then I t hink, that's the spell of Hardy, the pastoral vs industrial;
the dreamer vs the doomed cryer, I mean, the cryer of doom.
My hat's off to Bill Needham's awesome reference.
Respect! This is an awesome list!
