"Yet why?" is indeed the operative phrase.
How tempting you make it to put the boot in, Carolyn!
You provide so much more than just the poetry to go for.
One is almost also inclined to feed(back)you up by taking on
all your stuff in reply, if it weren't for all them punters
paying for it (especially if it gets into the Review)
(and Betty's rage, of course).
Is the poem a panto to you with J Cricket lurking in the wings?
It never occurred to me that there might be 'anthropo-whatsits' hiding
there too (and look at your own penultimate sentence)
but what you say has made me inclined to agree Hardy's scene
is rather stage-managed.
I liked that sage reference to the undermining of the anthropocentric
hierarchical viewpoint. Almost Gladstonian in flavour-
or is it Disraelian?(ask Eric).
