Hello again
Following Roy's lead on the search for the actual
stone, I read in Millgate's A biography revisited',
ch.6 'St Juliot,
"A tiny sketch by Emma showing a tomblike slab beneath
a tree carries Hardy's annotation 'Our Stone' and
evidently records a spot in the extensive rectory
garden where they were accustomed to sit in shared
privacy which neither Mrs Holder nor her husband would
have been anxious to disturb." (p119)
'Runic' or not, if we are looking for biographical
connections for the inspiration of the poem, maybe we
need go no further than the grounds of the rectory
gardens in St Juliot, 1870, if they still exist.
best wishes
Carolyn
NB: Productivity high due to damaged discs - I am now
returning to the horizontal!
