I can't comment on the first or third of these speculations, but surely the second cannot be the case? This very Hardyan poem does not strike me as 'slight' so I wonder what criteria people would use to make such a distinction. Is this poem anthologised frequently, for example? Do people think the argument fails to flow sufficiently well, that the jump to "till I house with dust" is too sudden?

On a personal level, this poem has become associated in my mind with 'By the Runic Stone', which did excite a lot of comment from subscribers. It may just be the referral to 'whiling...away' the hours and the word 'zest' that does that (plus an acknowledged inclination on my part to view both poems as possibly referring to a biographical 'anniversary' of some sort).

Anyway, back to work tomorrow - happy summer term to all teachers on the site

best wishes
