Carolyn, how plucky you are mentioning the homophone -- I hope you don't
have to smart for it! What about ' galleried [k]naves' and (optional)
'mighty [s]quires' ? Hardy would know that in most people's hearts and minds
their religion has come more from hymns than sermons and orthodox litany.
The title more than hints at subversion when you set it against
such worthy phrases as 'Wellington at Waterloo' and 'Saint Paul at Ephesus
'. It's not an exact parallel but contrast those with -- and I can recall
my daughters fluttering their hands and telling everyone to shush-- the
modern, secular, demotic hymn, 'Wind beneath my feet': Bette Midler at the
Palladium.
